Riparian buffers provide refugia during secondary forest succession

چکیده

Abstract Aim Secondary forests regenerating from human disturbance are increasingly becoming a predominant forest type in many regions, and they play significant role community dynamics. Understanding the factors that underlie variation species responses during secondary succession is important for understanding assembly biodiversity monitoring management. Because vary ecology behaviour, to ecosystem change should among species. Here, we show habitat (riparian, upland), phylogeny, traits mediate anuran lizard probability of occurrence richness pasture forest. Location Sarapiquí Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. Methods We used phylogenetic occupancy models estimate assemblage‐level species‐specific 30 chronosequence sites include pasture, mature sites. Results For majority species, found increasing upland habitats as regenerated similar riparian across forest, Species' stage were phylogenetically correlated, trend was especially strong response Anurans with lentic larval had positive habitat, anurans lotic variable different stages compared Main Conclusions Our study, which focuses on minimally isolated reference sites, indicated rapidly recovered level relatively short time span (approximately 20 years). Riparian key features our system provide refugia organisms early successional stages. Maintenance vegetation along streams shows can mitigate conversion by maintaining buffers.

Liana effects on biomass dynamics strengthen during secondary forest succession.

Secondary forests are important carbon sinks, but their biomass dynamics vary markedly within and across landscapes. The biotic and abiotic drivers of this variation are still not well understood. We tested the effects of soil resource availability and competition by lianas on the biomass dynamics of young secondary tropical forests in Panama and assessed the extent to which liana effects were ...

Tree–Shrub Interactions During Early Secondary Forest Succession in Uganda

One of the greatest challenges for ecologists this century will be restoring forests on degraded tropical lands. This restoration will require understanding complex processes that shape successional pathways, including interactions between trees and other plants. Shrub species often quickly invade disturbed tropical lands, yet little is known about whether they facilitate or inhibit subsequent ...

Understanding the Science Behind Riparian Forest Buffers: Factors Influencing Adoption

The riparian area is that area of land located immediately adjacent to streams, lakes, or other surface waters. Some would describe it as the floodplain. The boundary of the riparian area and the ad join ing uplands is gradual and not always well defined. However, riparian areas differ from the uplands because of their high levels of soil moisture, frequent flooding, and unique assemblage of pl...

Placement of Riparian Forest Buffers to Improve Water Quality

Riparian forest buffers can improve stream water quality, provided they intercept and remove contaminants from surface runoff and/or shallow groundwater. Soils, topography, hydrology, and surficial geology determine the capability of forest buffers to intercept and treat these flows. This paper describes landscape analysis techniques for identifying and mapping locations where forest buffers ca...

Community assembly during secondary forest succession in a Chinese subtropical forest

Subtropical broad-leaved forests in southeastern China support a high diversity of woody plants. Using a comparative study design with 303 30 m plots (n1⁄4 27) from five successional stages (,20, ,40, ,60, ,80, and 80 yr), we investigated how the gradient in species composition reflects underlying processes of community assembly. In particular, we tested whether species richness of adult trees ...
